Here is a quick peek at some (but certainly not all) of the personal projects I have been up to in the past few months.
One day, amidst a slurry of thoughts, I had the idea to use the rapid prototype production abilities of a 3D printer to create quick and accessible litho plates for block printing onto tee-shirts using screen printing ink. After collaborating with a friend who is immersed in the 3D printing community, we designed and produced this printing press and a method for turning any legible vector art into a woodblock-style printing plate. This has become a favorite activity of community events, as it allows each person to print their own commemorative shirts!
I have a ukulele that I restrung to resemble the strings on a banjo so that I could continue to practice while passengering on long road trips, and I love it very much. However, I needed a safe, yet easily accessible, place to store it in my house. The only acceptable solution for this became a quirky scuplture of two hands float-mounted on the wall to support the instrument in a respectful way. So began my first ever journey into body casting.
A few years ago my partner and I purchased a duplex that had a lot of great potential, but was in very rough shape. We pulled everything out, down to the studs, joists, and rafters and have been carefully rebuilding it with our own designs. I drew up all of the floor plans and mockups, and the two of us (with occasional help from an interested friend) have been framing, plumbing, drywalling, and more, ever since. Here is a quick look at my plans and intallation for custom trim tile in the shower (I've become very good at running complex cuts on the tile saw).
I also really enjoy basic carpentry and rough framing. There was SO much more involved in this project (still ongoing), but here is just a little glimpse of my favorite part.
I work with a group of artists, musicians, and collaborators throughout the year to produce small events in real life and to maintain a weekly Friday night DJ live performance stream online. Together, we have cultivated a community of acceptance, positivity, and building great things out of whatever we have laying around. Every year we set up a dance and performance stage at an outdoor venue. With input from the team members, I designed a mural for our 16' x 16' raised stage and we worked together to trace and paint the mural onto the stage using very durable industrial bridge paint.
In my leisure time I enjoy painting and drawing. Typically these are things that I create for specific people, designing imagery to suit someone's personality.
I also enjoy sewing, and usually have a project or two underway. Shown here are curtains that I made from discount fabric, with the goal of maintaining some privacy while still letting sunlight into the room.
I enjoy building fun or whimsical things out of just about any material. No cookies were harmed in the making of this automobile.
